FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS TO RECEIVE GRANT FOR COPS IN SCHOOLS
WASHINGTON- Fairview Heights Police Department has been awarded a $125,000 grant for one full time School Resource Officer under the Department of Justice's COPS In Schools program, U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello (D-IL) announced today.
"Ensuring the safety and well-being of students in schools is paramount," said Costello, a former police officer. "This funding, providing a School Resource Officer to Fairview Heights, will enhance the schools, and community."
School Resource Officers combine the functions of law enforcement and education by teaching crime prevention and substance abuse programs, monitoring troubled students and building respect for law enforcement among students.
The COPS In Schools grants provide a maximum of $125,000 per officer over a three year period. To date, the COPS program has funded more than 105,000 officers nationwide.
