WASHINGTON-- The U.S. House of Representatives approved the Defense Authorization Conference Report which includes language requested by U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello (D-IL) to convey the Charles Melvin Price Support Center to the Tri-City Port District.
"I am pleased that Congress has granted approval to legislation to convey the Charles Melvin Price Support Center to the Tri-City Port District ," said Costello. "This is a win-win situation for the local community and the federal government. We started work on this over a year ago with the support of Mayors John Hamm of Madison, Ron Selph of Granite City and Tyrone Echols of Venice and local business leaders."
The bill contains language offered by Costello that will convey the entire Price Center to the Tri-City Port District. The Port District plans to implement a re-development plan that the District believes has the potential of creating 1,000 new jobs. In addition, the Port District will keep some property under lease for existing tenants and reserve other parcels for the Army Reserve and Navy.
The bill will now go to the Senate were it is expected to be approved and then signed into law by President Clinton.
