CONGRESSMAN COSTELLO ANNOUNCES EAST ST. LOUIS/ST. LOUIS BROWNFIELDS SHOWCASE COMMUNITY
WASHINGTON-- U.S. Congressman Jerry F. Costello (D-IL) announced today that East St. Louis/St. Louis has been named a Brownfields Showcase Community by the Environmental Protection Agency.
"This is great news for the region," Costello said. "The designation will provide the East St. Louis/St. Louis region with funds to rehabilitate three brownfield areas within the Empowerment Zone, providing significant new economic and recreational opportunities."
The two cities have planned or undertaken brownfield redevelopment projects in the Bi-state region that have an estimated investment of $747 million and are estimated to create more than 7,000 jobs.
Sixteen Brownfields Showcase Communities were initially designated in 1998; this round designated 12 additional Showcase Communities.
The exact amount of the award will be determined by the Regional Office.
