HOUSE SUBCOMMITTEE APPROVES FUNDING FOR DISTRICT WATER PROJECTS

Washington - U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello (D-IL) announced today that the House Energy & Water Appropriations Subcommittee has funded numerous projects in the 12th Congressional District for Fiscal Year 2002. While the projects must still be approved by the full Appropriations Committee as well as the full House and Senate, Costello is confident the funding will be retained.

"These are important infrastructure projects that have distinct economic benefits both locally and nationally. This is the first step in the process and I will continue to work to ensure that these projects go forward," stated Costello.

The projects include:

  • $100,000 for a required study of deteriorating gravity drains within the Prairie du Pont levee district.
  • $70,000 for a required study of problems with the pumping stations and drainage districts in Monroe County.
  • $45,000 to restore the aquatic ecosystem of Chouteau Island, Madison County.
  • $491,000 for operation and maintenance of the Kaskaskia Navigation System.
  • $3.617 million for work at the Chain of Rocks Canal, Madison County.
  • $1 million for work at Canteen Creek, Madison and St. Clair Counties.
  • $500,000 for the Mel Price Lock and Dam.
  • $341,000 for work at the Wood River Levee, Madison County.
  • $130,000 for a study into habitat restoration in Alexander and Pulaski Counties.
