Washington - U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello (D-IL) today voted in favor of legislation that would correct the marriage penalty tax, an irregularity in the tax code that causes many married couples to pay more in taxes, and double the child tax credit. Fixing the marriage penalty tax will save affected couples on average over $1,100 annually. Costello also voted to eliminate the marriage penalty tax during the 106th Congress.
"Eliminating the marriage penalty tax is the fair thing to do. The tax code should not act as a disincentive to marriage," said Costello. "These changes will help working families."
