Washington - U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello (D-IL) announced today that the Greater Alton/Twin Rivers Convention and Visitors Bureau has received a $15,000 grant through the National Park Service of the U.S. Department of the Interior. The funds will be used to research, write and produce a freestanding floor display focusing on various aspects of Lewis and Clark's experience in Illinois, particularly the outfitting, training and commanding of the Corps of Discovery at Camp DuBois in Wood River, Illinois. The display will tour 12 locations in Illinois and Missouri between 2002 and 2004. 2003 marks the bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark expedition and a national celebration is planned.
"The 12th Congressional District of Illinois is home to the launching site of the Lewis and Clark expedition. This is of great historical significance and these funds will help bring attention and tourism dollars to our area during the bicentennial ceremonies," said Costello.
Costello has been involved in other Lewis and Clark related projects. He previously secured land and funds for the Lewis and Clark Visitors Center currently under construction in Wood River.
