Washington - U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello (D-IL) announced today that the full House of Representatives has approved $130,000 for Army Corps of Engineers work in Alexander and Pulaski Counties and $10 million in new funding for the Delta Regional Authority (DRA) as part of the Conference Report on Energy and Water Appropriations for Fiscal Year 2002. This is the final version of this legislation which is expected to be signed into law after approval by the Senate.
"Both of these projects will provide economic benefits to Southern Illinois. I am pleased that we have completed consideration of this important legislation," stated Costello.
The money in Alexander and Pulaski counties will be used for a required study of habitat restoration measures. The DRA is responsible for developing plans and establishing programs for the economic development of the Delta region. Sixteen Illinois counties are in the Delta, including Randolph, Perry, Jackson, Union, Alexander, Pulaski, Franklin, Williamson, Johnson, Massac, Hamilton, Saline, Pope, White, Gallatin, and Hardin. The $10 million is in addition to $20 million that was appropriated for this year and will carry over.
Costello is the ranking Democrat on the Economic Development, Public Buildings, and Emergency Management Subcommittee of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. The Subcommittee has jurisdiction over the DRA.
