Washington -- U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello (D-IL) announced today that the Southeast Regional Planning and Development Commission and the Southern Five Regional Planning and Development Commission have both received $12,500 grants from the Delta Regional Authority (DRA). The funds will be used to help support other DRA projects in the counties served by these organizations, including Alexander, Gallatin, Hamilton, Hardin, Johnson, Massac, Pope, Pulaski, Saline and Union counties.
"The DRA will help spur economic development in Southern Illinois," said Costello. "By partnering with local planning agencies we can maximize our federal, state and local resources."
Modeled after the Appalachian Regional Commission, the DRA is responsible for developing plans and establishing programs for the economic development of the Delta region. Sixteen Illinois counties are in the Delta, including the 10 listed above and Franklin, Jackson, Perry, Randolph, White and Williamson. The DRA was recently reauthorized for $30 million a year through 2007.
Costello is currently serving his eighth term in the House. He is a senior member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, and the Ranking Democratic Member on the Economic Development, Public Buildings, and Emergency Management Subcommittee, which has jurisdiction over the DRA.
