Washington - The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee today introduced the Transportation Equity Act-A Legacy for Users (TEA-LU), a $375 billion highway and transit bill. Congressman Jerry F. Costello (D-IL) is a cosponsor of the legislation.
Costello noted the bill provides an additional $3.7 billion in highway funding and $1.4 billion in transit funding for the State of Illinois over six years. These figures represent increases over current spending of 69% and 74% respectively.
In addition, the bill establishes a $17.6 billion section for funding projects of national significance. While the projects are not yet identified, Costello assisted in drafting the criteria, and the new Mississippi River Bridge will meet the criteria and qualify for funding.
"This bill takes a tremendous step forward in improving our nation's roads, bridges and transit systems," Costello said. "At the same time, it will boost the economy. Every billion dollars we spend on roads provides 47,000 jobs and creates $6.2 billion in economic activity."
Nationwide, TEA-LU will provide $298.7 billion for highways, $69.2 billion for transit and $7.5 billion for safety. This represents a 65% increase over current surface transportation funding. The bill will be considered by the House early next year.
Costello is a Senior Member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and the senior Democrat on the Water Resources and Environment Subcommittee.
