Belleville, IL - Alvan Hanson, an area U.S. Army veteran, was honored on Tuesday, December 21, 2004 by U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello, (D-IL). Congressman Costello presented military medals to Mr. Hanson at the Congressman's District Office in Belleville, Illinois.
Mr. Hanson, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II served primarily in southern Europe and participated in several campaigns that included Tunisia, Naples-Foggia, Rome and the northern Appenines. He entered the Army in May, 1939 and was discharged in June, 1945. Mr. Hanson is a current resident of Belleville, Illinois. Among the medals he received are the Bronze Star, the Good Conduct Medal, the American Defense Service Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, the Army of Occupation Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge 1st Award, the Honorable Service Lapel Button (WWII) and the Marksman Badge & Carbine Bar.
Mr. Hanson's wife, Eugenie, contacted the Congressman's office requesting his help in securing the medals.
