NATIONAL GREAT RIVERS RESEARCH AND EDUCATION CENTER RECEIVES FUNDING IN BUDGET BILL

Washington - U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello (D-IL) announced today projects that are part of the Omnibus Appropriations bill for fiscal year 2005 that passed Saturday. The legislation is expected to be signed into law by the President.

The projects include:

  • $2 million for operation and maintenance of the Kaskaskia Navigation System. Costello restored funding for the Kaskaskia after it was severely cut in President Bush's budget request earlier this year.
  • $540,000 for continued work at the National Great Rivers Research and Education Center, a collaborative effort between Lewis and Clark Community College, the University of Illinois and other partners to monitor and study river systems, watersheds and their ecology. Costello has previously secured over $1.3 million for the project.
  • $300,000 for work at the Wood River Drainage and Levee District, Madison County, to continue work on the Grassy Lake Pump Station.

"This funding will help maintain the Kaskaskia as a viable waterway for our farmers and industries, which is important for the regional economy," said Costello. "There is also money for the National Great Rivers Research and Education Center, which will provide greater research and educational opportunities for the Mississippi River.  Investing in our students has proven to be a smart federal investment."
