Washington - U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello (D-IL) announced today that both the New Athens Fire Protection District and the Wood River Fire Department have received Assistance to Firefighters grants through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
New Athens received $77,655 in grant funds while Wood River received $70,110. Both grants will be used for fire operations and firefighter safety. Congressman Costello cosponsored the legislation that created the Assistance to Firefighters program.
"Improving the equipment and resources of our local fire departments is one of the most important things we can do to enhance public safety," said Costello. "Our first responders put their lives on the line everyday, and this dedication deserves our full support."
