Washington - U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello (D-IL) will participate in the inaugural run of the new Amtrak Saluki train, riding from Carbondale to Du Quoin, at 9:00 a.m. central time Tuesday, October 17. A pre-ride program of remarks at the Carbondale Amtrak station is expected to take place before the train departs.
Costello is a senior member of the House Railroads Subcommittee and a long-time supporter of Amtrak. He has been a leader in the effort to ensure the stability of the railroad, which is especially important to Southern Illinois and Southern Illinois University. Costello and SIU President Glenn Poshard have worked closely on Amtrak issues, and Costello urged Amtrak to name the line "Saluki."
