Washington - U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello (D-IL) today urged President Bush, for the third time, to approve Governor Blagojevich’s request for a federal disaster declaration for Alexander, Franklin, Jackson, Perry, Pulaski, Randolph, Union, Williamson and 13 other Illinois counties that endured heavy rains and flooding the week of March 16. The President denied the initial appeal in May, and no decision has been rendered on a subsequent appeal and additional request. The Federal Emergency Management Agency estimates the costs incurred by state and local governments to exceed $12 million.
“It is long past time to make a decision on these requests,” said Costello. “Just as other areas of the state hit hard by flooding and storms this year, federal assistance would be a great help to Southern Illinois to repair damage and make sure communities are prepared for future inclement weather. I will continue to work with the rest of the Illinois Congressional delegation to address these needs.”
