Washington - U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello (D-IL issued the following statement today regarding the announcement by the U.S. Steel Corporation that Granite City Steel will be idled due to the poor economy and its affect on the steel industry:
“It is important to remember that U.S. Steel has said that this is a temporary idling of Granite City Steel, and that as soon as economic conditions allow, the company anticipates bringing all of the workers back. In the meantime, I will work with state and Madison County officials to ensure the workers and their families have access to all available benefits. I will also continue to work with my colleagues in Congress as we evaluate economic stimulus proposals that can help boost domestic manufacturing.”
