Washington - U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello (D-IL) has introduced a bill, H.R. 6061, to name the post office at 219 East Main Street in West Frankfort, Illinois after Congressman Ken Gray (D-IL). A native of West Frankfort, Congressman Gray was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1954, serving through 1974. He ran again for the House in 1984 and won, serving two more terms. Prior to his tenure in Congress, Congressman Gray earned three bronze stars for his service in World War II and owned a car dealership and air service.
“Kenny Gray is a true American original who has given a tremendous amount to our country and Southern Illinios,” said Costello. “He was a tireless advocate for our region and built a reputation as a member who worked well with his colleagues to get the job done. He understood the importance of infrastructure investment for economic growth and made that a hallmark of his congressional career. Congressman Gray was very helpful to me as a freshman member of Congress in 1988, and I will always be grateful for his help. Naming this post office after him will serve as a lasting reminder of his accomplishments.”
Congressman Gray has remained a strong presence in community affairs since his retirement, serving on several boards and heading up local projects, particularly regarding rural health care. The entire Illinois Congressional delegation has cosponsored the bill, and Costello expects it to be considered in the near future.
