Washington - U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello (D-IL) today applauded President Obama’s decision to declare nine Southern Illinois counties a federal disaster area, including Alexander, Pulaski and Union in the 12th Congressional District. The counties endured a severe ice storm in January that resulted in as much as $16 million in damages. The federal declaration will allow state and local governments to recover 75% of their extraordinary storm-related costs. Costello urged President Obama to take this action last month.
“This is a very timely decision that will greatly help recovery efforts,” said Costello. “As we have seen this week, winter is not over, and federal help will help make sure that local governments can meet upcoming needs.”
