Washington - U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello (D-IL) released details today concerning his Annual “An Artistic Discovery” Art Competition to be held in conjunction with the 2009 Art on the Square in downtown Belleville, May 15 - 17. The competition award ceremony will be on May 17th, at 2:00 p.m., in front of the St. Clair County Building.
“An Artistic Discovery” is an annual High School Art Competition sponsored by the U.S. House of Representatives. Congressman Costello invites art students from all high schools in the 12th Congressional District to participate. The Grand Prize artwork will be sent to Washington D.C. to be displayed in the Cannon Office Building Tunnel, leading to the U.S. Capitol, for one year. In addition, the Grand Prize winner will receive three round trip airfares, two tickets to attend the opening ceremony in Washington D.C. on June 24th and will be eligible for a scholarship to a college of art and design.
Art on the Square will again host this competition as well as its own high school competition. Students will have the opportunity to enter one work of art into one or both competitions.
For questions, additional information or to obtain the release form that must be completed and signed, call Congressman Costello’s Belleville office at (618) 233-8026 or visit the Congressman's website at costello.house.gov. The deadline for submitting an entry form is May 1, 2009. Information has been mailed to high school art teachers and principals throughout the 12th Congressional District.
“Each year, we have seen an impressive display of artistic talent by the high school student artists from Southwestern and Southern Illinois,” said Costello. “I would like to thank Art on the Square for again hosting the Congressional Art Competition and I encourage everyone to stop by the high school exhibit this year.”
