Washington - U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello (D-IL) announced today that the Belleville Fire Department has received a $433,520 Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant through the Assistance to Firefighters program of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The funds will be used to hire firefighters and/or recruit and retain volunteer firefighters. Costello cosponsored the legislation that created the Assistance to Firefighters program.
“Making sure our local fire departments are adequately staffed is one of the most important things we can do to enhance public safety,” said Costello. “Our first responders put their lives on the line everyday, and their dedication deserves our full support.”
