WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) today awarded the St. Louis to Chicago high speed rail corridor $186 million for further work on the project. The corridor is one of the most advanced in the United States and has received over $1.4 billion in federal funding.
U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello (D-IL), a senior member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, is a strong supporter of high-speed rail and welcomed today’s announcement.
“I commend Transportation Secretary LaHood for again making high-speed rail in Illinois a priority,” said Costello. “This project will better connect our state and region and is a prime driver of economic development in our local area. Improved passenger rail service is an important part of a coordinated effort at all levels of government to make the bi-state region a multi-modal transportation hub. Our central location and access to major highways, waterways, railroads and airports leave us well-positioned to be a national leader in transportation efficiency.”
As part of this effort, America’s Central Port and the City of Alton have received over $28 million in federal funding for multi-modal projects.
