Representing the 6th District of Pennsylvania

Press Release

West Chester, PA – Rep. Ryan Costello (PA-06) today announced the Muhlenberg Area Ambulance Association in Pennsylvania’s Sixth Congressional District will receive a federal Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Rep. Costello, a member of the EMS Caucus, is a strong supporter of the AFG program.

“This grant will provide resources first responders need to ensure they can do their critical work effectively,” said Rep. Costello. “The first responders at Muhlenberg Area Ambulance Association work each day to keep communities in Berks County safe and I thank them for their service.”

"The grant will be used to upgrade our four existing ambulance litters, making it more comfortable for patients we might be transporting in our response area. We respond to nearly 4,000 emergency and non-emergency calls per year. Saving valuable time in loading the patients into the ambulance is also an important plus. Additionally, the upgrades will add a significant safety feature to the way the litters are secured, especially in the event of an accident involving the ambulance. In addition to the benefits to patients being transported, the upgraded litters will significantly decrease the chance of lifting injuries to our medical personnel. The new equipment will literally lift and secure the litters into the ambulance, hopefully resulting in fewer Worker's Comp claims. Finally I would be remiss if I did not mention the fine assistance we received from Representative Costello and his staff for the letters of support written in our behalf - it was much appreciated!" said Robert Shipe, Chief & General Manager of Muhlenberg Area Ambulance Association.

The Muhlenberg Area Ambulance Association, which serves Berks County, will receive $106,935 in grant funds for operations and safety. According to DHS, this grant category can provide funds for training, protective equipment, facility alterations, and materials that support first responder operations and safety.
